This week, 22 more groups were granted construction permits for new low power FM (LPFM) radio stations. This brings the grand total of granted construction permits from the fall 2013 application window to 1,759. Among the new grantees this week, 12 of the organizations are churches or religious groups and 10 are other non-profits. In […]
On Friday, March 6th I popped by University of California, Santa Barbara’s college radio station KCSB 91.9 FM. I was in town for the weekend and it was the perfect chance to finally write about the station. Even though I’d visited before for a UCRN conference in 2011, I’d never gotten around to writing a […]
As I mentioned last week, I began my college radio station tours of 2015 a few weeks ago in Kentucky. My first stop was to University of Kentucky’s station WRFL-FM and you can see my report here. Also, in yesterday’s LPFM Watch I talked about a new college radio LPFM, UCENTRAL Student Radio at University […]
We are now up to 1,737 granted construction permits for new low power FM (LPFM) stations, as a result of the fall 2013 application window. In addition to some new construction permits this week, there was also some FCC enforcement action at an existing LPFM and an existing FM is facing an uncertain future after […]

I traveled to Louisville in order to attend the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) conference and to see some friends. Lucky for me, two of those friends have […]
Today REC Networks announced that it has begun work on the REC Radio History Project. It has started to mine the FCC database for historic AM station information and will be adding that material to the REC Broadcast Query tool. So far, it’s added information related to Los Angeles stations KFI and KHJ. According to […]

Although it’s in a tiny space, the station presents an inspiring array of programming that’s often linked to the adventurous artistic endeavors of […]
In November, 2014 there was a fascinating exhibit at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) that was part of the week-long Haunted Reflections: Walter Benjamin in San Francisco event. In the course of researching the exhibit, I ran across some information about the unknown-to-me radio station at the San Francisco Art Institute known as The […]
After a frustrating first attempt at building a crystal radio with a radio kit over Christmas, I was excited to move on to the simpler-sounding Snap, Plug and Play Radio kit from Wonderology. Marketed as a project for ages 8 and up, the box touted that you could “create your own working FM radio!” (more…)
Happy World Radio Day! This year’s theme is youth and innovation (see Paul’s post from earlier today), a timely sentiment considering what a great week it’s been for college radio! As we reported yesterday, Rice University was just granted a construction permit for a new low power FM (LPFM) radio station. This will allow KTRU.org […]
