On Friday I continued my Spinning Indie radio station field trip series with a visit to Northeastern Illinois University’s college radio station WZRD 88.3 FM. With this trip, I was happy to check another Chicago college radio station off my list of stations to visit. Last summer I toured WLUW 88.7 FM at Loyola University, Chicago and also visited Radio DePaul at DePaul University. Back in 2008 I visited nearby WNUR 89.3 FM at Northwestern University and in 2009 I got the chance to see the suburban high school radio station WGBK 88.5 FM, located just outside of Chicago.

WZRD was a source of curiosity for me, as DJs were locked out of the freeform radio station last summer. I knew that the “lock-out” had concluded in January and was happy to finally get to visit the station in order to take a look at the nearly 40-year-old station’s collection of music and artifacts from its storied past.
