College Radio Watch: The 2000 KTRU Shutdown, CKUT Radio Camp, and More News

With the spring semester rapidly drawing to a close, college radio stations are wrapping up the year, hosting spring concerts (WHPK’s Summer Breeze festival is tomorrow, Saturday, May 12 in Chicago), and making preparations for the fall. With finals, papers, and graduations; it’s a hectic time.

Some stations are also running summer camps for kids and teens. I’m always thrilled to hear about radio opportunities for young audio producers, so do let me know if your station has camps in the works. McGill University’s campus community radio station CKUT in Montreal is hosting radio camps for 10 to 13 year olds and for 14 to 17 year olds in multiple sessions this summer and I’m green with envy. Highlights from the 2017 CKUT Summer Camp are on SoundCloud.

Before leaving town for summer break, students may want to submit proposals for fall radio conferences, including College Broadcasters Inc.’s National Student Electronic Media Convention in Seattle in late October and the Grassroots Radio Conference in Portland, Oregon in early October. Both events are actively seeking session proposals, which can be an excellent way to help bring some interesting topics to the forefront. I’m always eager to hear about local music/college radio scenes, stories and histories; so, if any of you folks in the Pacific Northwest have panel ideas, I’d encourage you to pass them along to the decision-makers at CBI and GRC.
