College Radio Watch: College Radio Response to the Election, College Radio Day Recap and More News

My journeys to Arkansas continue on the Radio Survivor Podcast this week. Take a listen to episode 70 hear about my visit to college radio station KHDX-FM at Hendrix College. I also give a recap of some of the College Radio Day festivities that took place last week. In a nice Arkansas station tour/College Radio Day convergence, University of Arkansas college radio station KXUA (focus of podcast #69 and station tour #115) posted a great video featuring a collection of its DJs talking about the importance of college radio. It made me smile.

College Radio Responses to the Presidential Election

It was interesting to see how college radio responded to this week’s presidential election. Some stations did live news coverage, whereas others stuck to music. On Twitter, I found evidence of some of the varying reactions. On election night, @mdlbird wrote, “Oh jesus, college radio playing ‘it’s the end of the world as we know it’ get fucked.” The day after, @AggieRadio tweeted, “Regardless of the election results, Aggie Radio plans to continue spinning beautiful music indefinitely #collegeradio #usu #utahstate.” On the same day, @LindseyNTingler tweeted, “Being a college radio DJ is weird today.”

Tom Levins (@Tom_Levins) tweeted, “As a Tribute to the election results, my college’s radio station is now playing this song after every news bulletin… haha @GreenDay” and attached this photo:

While most college radio-themed tweets that I saw referencing the election seemed to focus on the negatives, @tyingmycravat tweeted about broadcasting a “Trump victory playlist on the college radio station.” That was in contrast to folks like @localbat, who wrote, “Even the college radio station is only playing sad songs. Nov 9, 2016 the day we all wept for the future of the country” and @JustinSWilt who wrote, “Listening to several college radio stations today. Many are featuring Canadian tunes to help listeners consider such a move. #MusicHumor.” In a similar vein, @RobbyKarol wrote, “Seattle college radio played ‘Terrible Lie’ by NiN, followed by ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'” @benfowlkesMMA tweeted, “The college radio DJ cranking a live version of ‘War Pigs’ this morning, he gets me.”
