College Radio Watch: Colorado Station Tours, KSYM’s 50th, Unique Welcome from KCR and More News

I’m doing my best to record audio during my college radio station visits, as I think it adds another dimension to my station tour reports. On this week’s Radio Survivor Podcast (episode 63), I go behind the scenes at Colorado College station The SOCC and University of Colorado, Boulder station Radio 1190. I ended up gabbing so much that the two tours make up the entire episode, which ideally gives you a good sense of the breadth of college radio in Colorado.

College Radio History Events in the Philadelphia Area in October

History is also on my mind, as I have a few college radio history events planned for next month. I just got word that two proposed history-related sessions (that I will be helping to lead) will be on the schedule at the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) convention in Philadelphia; including: “Preserving College Radio History: Advice from the Radio Preservation Task Force” and a “College Radio History Show and Tell.” Additionally, leading up to the conference, I will be speaking at Haverford College on October 19 about “The Secret 90+ Year History of College Radio at Haverford.”

Happy 50th to KSYM

Happy 50th anniversary to KSYM at San Antonio College! A 15-minute video chronicles the station’s history and features some great photos, video and interviews. One of the folks being interviewed speculated that it could be the first FM educational radio station at a junior aka community college; although I know of several others that started before 1966 (including Foothill College radio station KFJC, where I DJ, which launched on FM in 1959). If you know of other early community college radio stations, let me know in the comments.

KCR Welcomes Students with Rad Video

I’m hearing about a lot of college radio stations that are gearing up for the new school year with orientation meetings and other campus events. KCR went a step further with this rad, retro-styled video extolling the virtues of the San Diego State University radio station.
