College Radio Watch: CJSW Crafts Book Honoring Station’s History, Temporary Shut-Downs and More News

I had a wonderful time flipping through the dial on National Radio Day (did you hear our special podcast?) this past Saturday and particularly enjoyed scanning through college radio stations on my Internet radio. I heard some amazing things, including a great mix of older Japanese punk and hardcore music on KMSU, some old favorites on KTRU (yay, Sebadoh!) and a nice variety of music in languages other than English on various stations. It was as good of an excuse as any to try out as many college radio stations as I could in one evening.

CJSW Celebrates Station History by Publishing “We Make Radio” Book

Awhile back I wrote about the incredible work that has been done to preserve and share historic audio from University of British Columbia radio station CiTR. And now another Canadian station has embarked on an amazing history project. The Calgary Herald writes that University of Calgary’s CJSW has just published a 160-page book We Make Radio: 30-Something Years of CJSW 90.9 FM. According to the piece, “With other things such as photos, portraits, images from old funding drive campaigns, letters of complaint and even an illustrated telling of one of its earliest and most famous chapters — that of a member hiding himself inside the studio in order to foil attempts by the U of C’s Student Union to shut it down — it’s a pretty wonderful and colourful tribute to an integral local arts institution.”

This is a truly impressive project celebrating the station’s 30 year history on FM and I hope that other stations will be inspired to document their histories in similar ways. Read more about the book on the University of Calgary website.

WXJM off the Air Temporarily

The Breeze reports that James Madison University’s student radio station WXJM will not be airing its full slate of programming over FM this semester due to the fear of indecency. According to the piece, “These changes are occurring because WXJM hasn’t been able to control these violations, which have been occurring more than once a day. Student shows will be broadcast exclusively online this fall.” Bluegrass programming will air over the FM channel in place of student programming. Historically, the station has aired bluegrass music (under the moniker of Possum Radio) during late night hours or when a DJ didn’t show up for a shift.
