Wild About You! 3CR’s Australian underground rock collection, circa 1963-68

In case you are looking for some excellent half-century old Australian underground rock, all digitized and ready to download, here it is:

Wild About You coverYou can thank Aussie community radio station 3CR for this 2004 anthology, titled Wild About You: Tales from the Australian Rock Underground. That was the name of a book, blurbed as such:

“Bloodied noses! Car crashes! Police harassment! Jealous boyfriends! These were just a few of the hazards that faced the beat groups who roamed Australia during the mid-sixties. Despite these obstacles (perhaps because of them) a number of homegrown acts came to epitomise the down and dirty sound of the Antipodean underground.”

Along with the tome, authored by Iain McIntyre and Ian D. Marks, came a CD containing 16 Australian garage band hits, all covered by more recent ensembles. To wit:

There’s a ton of wonderful music here, all free, uploaded to the Internet Archive by the Ledatape Organisation. 3CR launched in Melbourne in 1976 “to provide a voice for those denied access to the mass media, particularly the working class, women, Indigenous people and the many community groups and community issues discriminated against in and by the mass media.”
