Hi Team RS: Very helpful video, thanks! So, if I have a RODE Podcaster mic (that allows one to hear what is being recorded while it records via plugging in headphones directly to the mic itself) and GarageBand and a MacBook Pro. Do I need a mixer? I’m an English major without a background in audio engineering who doesn’t want to sound like an amateur. Is a mixer only important when there’s more than one microphone? Also, I’ve been recording in the field for our couple of podcasts—Biodynamic Gardening Report and Central Coast Foodie Treasure Map—using a RODE SmartLav mic and the Voice Notes feature of my iPhone. Please advise.

    Hi Rachel,

No you don’t need a mixer. You are correct that a mixer is only necessary if you want to use more than one microphone or add other sources, like a CD or MP3 player, to be recorded. However, a mixer will not work with a USB microphone like the Podcaster. USB microphone are designed only to be plugged directly into a computer. So, as long as you only need to use one microphone your current set up is perfectly good.
