College Radio Watch: WBRU Plans to Sell FM License to Christian Radio Group and More News

My thoughts are with everyone in the path of destruction due to Hurricane Harvey. Images from the storm damage are terrifying and continue to haunt me. Not only do I worry about my friends in Houston and beyond, but I’m also thinking about college radio stations in the storm zone, including KTRU at Rice University and Coog Radio at University of Houston. Wishing all of you the best for safely weathering this horrible disaster.

Princeton Review “Best College Radio Stations” List

On last week’s Radio Survivor Podcast, I once again dissect the annual Princeton Review list of “Best College Radio Stations.” Based on online surveys, the top 20 list represents student opinion about the “popularity” of radio stations on campus. Although it doesn’t tell us much about the quality of any given school’s radio station, the ranking does tend to favor campuses with multiple radio stations.

WBRU License to Be Sold to K-LOVE Owner EMF

Yesterday I shared the news that Brown University’s independently owned commercial college radio station WBRU is expected to be sold to Christian radio group Educational Media Foundation. It’s speculated that WBRU’s programming may leave FM by September 1st, but will continue online. I’ll be keeping my eye on the story and am particularly curious to see the sale paperwork after it is filed with the FCC.
