College Radio Watch: Arkansas Travels and More College Radio News

I’m already itching to visit more college radio stations, but first I need to write up all of my recent field trips. With that goal in mind, I just posted a piece about my visit to college radio station KHDX at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Staffers there have been busy since my visit and also took a trip to the Grassroots Radio Conference, toured stations in Atlanta, and most recently had a staff field trip to community radio station KABF in Little Rock, Arkansas. There is also talk at KHDX and at KXUA (at University of Arkansas) about forming a college radio organization in Arkansas. I love it when college and community radio stations come together and I can’t wait to see how all of these new relationships in Arkansas develop in the months to come.

Another inspiring college radio participant, Sylvia Thomas, was a guest on this week’s Radio Survivor Podcast. A former college radio DJ at Goucher College and at Macalester College radio station WMCN, Thomas spent a year on a Watson Fellowship traveling around the world visiting more than 30 community radio stations.

And, finally, I was sorry to learn yesterday that educator and college radio proponent Len Mailloux died on Wednesday. Former board member for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System and founder of Simmons College Radio, Mailloux was devoted to student radio. My thoughts go out to his family, friends, students and colleagues in radio and at Simmons.
