College Radio Watch: Counting up to my 100th Radio Station Tour

OK. It’s the home stretch. Next week I will reveal which radio station was the inspiration for my 100th radio station field trip report. Any guesses? I provided some clues in this week’s Radio Survivor Podcast and we also invited listeners to take guesses using the hashtag #100RadioTours on social media.

Hunter College Radio Tour & Historical Tidbit on Radio as Tool to Help with Campus Unrest

This week, I also posted field trip #99, which was my tour of Hunter College radio station WHCS. On the podcast, I talked about some interesting historical tidbits that I found at the station, including a letter mentioning the Henderson Commission aka the Temporary Commission to Study the Causes of Campus Unrest. Apparently the report mentioned that radio could be a good strategy for universities trying to grapple with student unrest and this was a bit of information that student radio proponents used in a proposal for a City University radio network.

As I wrote in my station visit post, “All of this was part of a broader campus communications plan. [City University Radio’s Director Peter] Edelstein writes, ‘A radio station with its broadest goal being public information about the university and its activities could only help. It would achieve the dialogue called for by the Henderson Commission (the Temporary Commission to Study the Causes of Campus Unrest) among students, parents and administrators of our colleges. It is the only feasible, day to day, basis for reaching all segments of the commuter population of your colleges, students and staff.'”

I just tracked down that report and it was fascinating to see how radio fit in.

The 1970 report, The Academy in Turmoil: First Report of the Temporary Commission to Study the Causes of Campus Unrest was prepared for the state of New York. Amid the lengthy findings is the following reference to radio: “It is evident that conflict exists between the college and surrounding communities. It is suggested that well prepared regular programs discussing societal issues be broadcast by the local radio stations and published in newspaper articles. Once we acknowledge a problem, then discourse may lead to solution.”
