WXRT is definitely one of my 10 favorite commercial stations. There are a lot more like these out there if you know where to look. Most (but not all) locally owned and run. All of them programmed by people who care about music rather than market share. I have no hesitation in recommending any of these stations:

1) WWCD, Columbus, OH (CD-101)
2) WEQX, Manchester, VT ("Real Alternative")
3) WRNR, Annapolis MD ("Where Music Matters")
4) KINB, Oklahoma City, OK (Spy FM)
5) KNRK, Portland OR (94-7 FM)
6) CKPK, Vancouver, BC (The Peak)
7) WFNX, Boston MA ("Real Alternative')
8) KGSR, Austin TX (Radio Austin)
9) KSLG, Eureka, CA (K-Slug)
10) KBZT, San Diego, CA (FM94-9)
11) KRXF, Bend OR (92-7 FM)
12) WVOD, Manteo, NC (The Sound)

Didn't even break a sweat making that list. I like all of these stations better than anything on satellite radio. And thanks to streaming internet, all of these stations are available worldwide. And if these are too mainstream for your taste, I know some HD-2 commerical stations that are even less mainstream. And I left some really good stations off that list as well.

I wholeheartedly agree! I grew up in the Chicago area and I whenever I make it back one of the first things I do is tune in to XRT. My wife things I'm a freak. I was just back about 3 mos ago and was actually shocked that it still seemed to be non-homogenized. I still have cassette tapes I recorded of some Sunday night "Un-concerts" from the 80's, including an incredible REM show (you know, before they were big) that I eventually converted to MP3.
